After U.S. lawmakers annoyed China during a visit to Taipei, Beijing sent six military aircraft to Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), prompting Taiwan’s military to deploy air defense missile systems.
While a team of U.S. lawmakers visited the self-governing island in a show of support, Beijing condemned it as “deliberately provocative,” and China said it was pursuing “military tactics” around the island.
Taiwanese authorities say the Chinese plane flew over the island’s southwestern waters. Participates in J-11 and J-16 multifunctional jet tactics. Taiwan’s armed forces responded by broadcasting radio warnings and deploying air defense missile systems.
The Chinese military sent frigates, bombers and fighter jets to the East China Sea and surrounding areas of Taiwan on Friday, the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command said in a statement to U.S. lawmakers during a news conference in Taipei.
“The operation is in response to recent US misrepresentations on the Taiwan issue,” it said, referring to the visiting US delegation.
“US bad actions and tactics are completely futile and extremely dangerous. Those who play with fire will burn themselves, “he said.
In a separate statement, the Chinese Defense Ministry said the US visit was “deliberately provocative” and “led to further escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait.”
Six U.S. senators, including Republican Senator Lindsay Graham and Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ying-wen on Friday morning.
The two-day visit, which was previously unpublished, has raised tensions between Beijing and Washington over China’s response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Since the conflict began in late February, China has maintained a neutral public position, urging countries to support efforts to end the conflict but resisting pressure from Washington and its European allies to criticize Russia.
U.S. President Joe Biden warned his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping of “consequences” if Beijing aided Russia in its attack, and senior Biden administration officials urged Beijing to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war.
Taiwan, on the other hand, has long been the subject of controversy between the United States and China, who consider self-governing Taiwan as part of their territory and oppose formal relations between the Taiwanese government and other foreign governments.
